Charlie Chaplin’s influence on Bollywood
It is the popular comedian Charlie Chaplin’s 129th birth anniversary today. While his fans are celebrating the day, Bollywood too has paid a tribute to this icon in many films over the years.
In ‘Sholay’ it was comedian Asrani who got into the Chaplin get-up to play a serious yet comic jailor just like Chaplin in the ‘Great Dictator’. Who can forget that dialogue – “Hum angrezon ke zamaane ke jailor hain! Ha haa…”
Sridevi well-known for portraying diverse characters put on a Chaplin act for a scene in ‘Mr India’. She and a child co-actor dressed up in Chaplin outfit with appropriate make-up put up a hilarious act in an important scene in the film. Going the unconventional way to shoot for a magazine cover, actor Vidya Balan donned a hat, a dark suit, moustache and walking stick to resemble Chaplin.
